Imperforate

[edit] Imperforate

Imperf Penny Black

The earliest stamps did not have perforated holes to separate them and are known as Imperforate (Without Perforations). The Penny Black is the classic example of an imperforate stamp. These stamps were separated by using scissors or torn and the width of their margins affect the value quite significantly.

Modern stamps can be found imperforate by error. These stamps are most often collected in pairs to show the full imperf state of the stamps.

[edit] Types of Imperf

  • Imperf Left - Where just the left hand side of the stamp is imperforate
  • Imperf Right - Where just the right hand side of the stamp is imperforate
  • Imperf Pair - A pair of stamps showing straight edges all round and inbetween
  • Imperf Between or Horizontal or Vertical - A pair of stamps with perforations all round but showing no perforations between the pair.
