Portrait, wearing medals (c1900) Dzierzon, a Silesian Pole, was discoverer of parthenogenesis in bees (the asexual reproduction of drones), first described role of 'royal jelly' in the development of queen bees, and was the designer of a widely-adpoted moveable frame beehive with defined space between the frames and slotted sides Dzierzon's discovery and publicising of his discoveries (particularly asexual reproduction) led to him being first compulsorily retired as a priest, and then being excommunicated by the Catholic Church
