  • Notes: Krotoa was a member of the Khoikhoi tribe, who learned Dutch and Portuguese, and acted as interpreter for the Dutch community of traders and farmers established by Jan van Riebeeck as a supply station on the sea route to the Indies. She is the first native of the Cape region to enter documented history, later marrying (her eldest daughter married Daniel Zaaijman, a friend of van Riebeeck). Krotoa’s portrait is based on a bookplate of 1820
