This stamp celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Australian Citizenship. The design shows the Commonwealth Government Coat of Arms. Prior to 26 January 1949, everyone born in Australia were considered to be British subjects; after 1949 people holding Australian citizenship were also British subjects. In 1973 the Act was renamed the Australian Citizenship Act 1948. Then in 1987 the legislation referring to British subject status was repealed and Australian citizens therefore ceased being recognised as British subjects.
