Dame Joan Sutherland, one of the world’s greatest opera singers, is the 2004 Australia Post Australian Legend. Sutherland is a marvellous soprano, able to reach and maintain incredibly high notes and loved for her powerful voice and presence on stage. Adoring Italian audiences called her ‘La Stupenda’, the Great One. Sutherland is known for rescuing many operas from oblivion, particularly in the field of Italian bel canto and in the French repertoire. She is also recognised throughout the world for being helpful, showing consideration for young and unknown artists and following her artistic vocation with integrity.

There are two 50c stamps in the issue; Dame Joan Sutherland performing in the role of Lucia in Lucia Di Lammermoor with Opera Australia in 1980 photographed by Branco Gaica; and a portrait of Dame Joan Sutherland, courtesy of Opera Australia, photographed by Patrick Jones.
