26kr ~ portrait of Joensen in uniform, troop carriers George Washington and Greenville Victory (in silhouette), and photo of the Edmund B Alexander (22,225 tons), from 1941 involved in setting up lend-lease bases and troop carrying Joensen, born in Greenland, later resident in Tórshavn, became an American citizen in 1928; he served in the ATS (Army Transport Service), and captained all the vessels shown on the stamp. His role in D-Day is unclear, but he was involved in the planning at top level, and was seen by a fellow Faroese on Omaha beach organising tug-transport
