GB 1865 Plate 66 "Royal reprint"

In September 1865 there was a printing of Die II Alphabet 3 plate 66. The plate had been withdrawn from use on 17/3/64 and was being held as a reserve plate. Although it has been claimed that the stamps were produced for members of the Royal Family there is no evidence of this. Printed on Large crown watermarked paper, Imperf. The black has an inverted watermark and there was probably only one sheet printed. Copies also exist in Carmine-rose, without an inverted watermark, with and without a Type 2 Specimen overprint.
