  • A November 1857 Cover with a penny red from Plate 55 DE, this stamp has just been confirmed to be a late use 'Savoy Gritty Print'. How did this occur? Well, on March 11, 1857, a fire occurred at Perkins Bacon's Fleet Street printing offices. The outcome was that they had to move the printing presses to a different location in Savoy Street. As in most Emergencies, problems arose procuring the stocks of all comodoties including printing ink. This stamp is a direct result of those problems, and the shade and overall apperance is of a blotchy gritty Colour. SG will hopefully soon change their catalogue to reflect this area of Line engraved history. A new suggested listing is going to be C9a. Plate 55 is a very scarce, plate from this printing. The cancel that ties the stamp to the cover is a Scottish 134 of Ellon. There is a CDS of Ellon on the rear as well. This cover was sent to Coynach near Clola, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
