Germany-DDR 1987 Historical Monuments - Rolands - I

From Stamps of the World
  • Label : "Deutsche Post" of the German Democratic Republic; 1987; commemorative small sheet of the issue "Historical Monuments – Rolands - I"“;

(issue of 4 stamps)

Note:
The mediaval "Roland‘s Statues" in many German towns (also: "Orlando's  Columns") go back to the figure of the "Hroutland" (= "Roland") which has lived around 736 – 15 August 778 as "Count of the Bretonic Mark" under Charles the Great ("Carolus Magnus") and which was described in the "Rolandslied", a mediaval "Chançon de geste". Also was he (Roland) the "Supreme rear commander" of the Franconian Army during the campaign against the Moors and as such a faithful paladin of Charles the Great. The mediaval columns of the Roland with sword replaced increasingly since After-Carolingian times the old Germanic Ziu-Colums (or "Zius-...), where amongst others was spoken right in pre-christian times. Also was a Roland‘s statue seen as allegory of civic basic rights of a town in the moyen age and was among others also a symbol of a town with market rights.
