Great Britain QV Postal Stationery Values

History In 1841 following the introduction & success of the Postage Stamp the Mulready envelopes were ridiculed by the public and the press. However the Post Office still wished to have a way of having a cover (envelope/sheet etc) that was prepaid. In 1841 the Penny Pink Post Office Issued envelope was first issued giving rise to Postal Stationery.

The method used was to supply Stationery in 2 formats.

1 Post Office designated specifications, supplied and sold by the Post Office. Post Office Issues
2 Public/Business Stationery sent in TO the Post Office to have postage impressed upon them. Stamped to Order

Private printed stationery was allowed for the public and businesses to cope with their postal requirements. From March 1857, the Post Office would impress envelopes, Lettersheets, Parcel labels and Wrappers. These were the embossed impressions with or without advertising. W.H.Smith the supplier of stationery and supplies used impressed stationery for their needs, with values (up to seven impressions per item) printed in the same colour.

W.H.Smith's Head Office was based at 186 Strand, London E.C.
