Handschuhsheim is the most populous district of Heidelberg. On an area of ​​1,511 hectares 17,003 inhabitants live here as of 2010.

The core of the district lies between Tiefburg and Vituskirche, the (inner) place is characterized by old farmhouses, winding alleyways and several restaurants and gardens. One of the oldest establishments is the Gasthaus Zum Roten Ochsen in Mühltalstraße. On the slopes of the Heiligenberg there are some villas dating back to the turn of the century.
