Ipswich is a large port town and borough in Suffolk, England, of which it is county town. The town is located in East Anglia about 10 miles (16 km) away from the mouth of the River Orwell and the North Sea.
Ipswich is both on the Great Eastern Main Line railway and the A12 road. Ipswich is surrounded by two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB); Suffolk Coast and Heaths and Dedham Vale.
Ipswich's modern name is derived from the medieval name Gippeswic, probably taken either from an Anglo-Saxon personal name or from an earlier name given to the Orwell Estuary (although unrelated to the name of the River Gipping). It has also been known as Gyppewicus and Yppswyche. The town has been continuously occupied since the Saxon period, and is contested to be one of the oldest towns in the United Kingdom. Ipswich was a settlement of great economic importance to England throughout its history, particularly in trade.
The town's historical dock, present-day Ipswich Waterfront, was known as the largest and most important dock in the kingdom. Ipswich is one of England's oldest towns, and is claimed to be the oldest still continuing town to have been established and developed by the English, with continuous settlement since early Anglo-Saxon times.
Ipswich was subject to bombing by German Zeppelins during World War I but the greatest damage by far occurred during the German bombing raids of World War II. The area in and around the docks were especially devastated. Eighty civilians died by enemy action in the Ipswich county borough area during the latter war. The last bombs to fall on Ipswich landed on Seymour Road at 2 a.m. on 2 March 1945, killing 9 people and destroying 6 houses.

Post card sent by Whitfield King (the stamp specialist and dealer in Ipswich UK) to ED Bacon Esq at Ilford Hall. This is Edward Denny Bacon, the well known philatelist and one time curator of the Royal Philatelic Collection. The card informs Bacon that "we cannot take less than 35/- for the pair of St Vincent.....". Bacon wrote works on St Vincent published in the 1890s but which stamps Whitfield King is referring is not stated. The post mark is also interesting. Although it looks like a standard duplex it is in fact a 4VODS, with a single arc on each side rather than the usual double arc. Parmenter states that the 4VODS was not entered in the Proof Books and issues it a Grade E Rarity rating. Note too, that the top and bottom of the numeral are more pointed than normal duplexes.

Ipswich Station
Ipswich railway station is on the Great Eastern Main Line in the East of England, serving the town of Ipswich, Suffolk.
The Eastern Union Railway (EUR) opened its first terminus in Ipswich, called Ipswich Stoke Hill, in 1846 on Station Road at the other end of the current tunnel, close to the old quay for the steamboats and the aptly named Steamboat Tavern. The Ipswich Steam Navigation Company had been formed in 1824/25 during a period of "steamship mania" and briefly offered services from the quay between Ipswich and London calling at Walton-on-the-Naze.
The current station is just to the north of Stoke tunnel, which was constructed by the Ipswich & Bury Railway as part of the Ipswich to Ely Line opening as far as Bury St. Edmunds in late 1846.
The station was re-sited to its present location in 1860. Some sources suggest that the main building was thought to be principally the work of Peter Bruff; who had certainly started the structure.
Architect Sancton Wood(1816-1886) won a competition to design the new station and it may have been is his design.
Ipswich Sorting Tender
In order to bring relief to the London Offices workloads Roland Hill approved the set up of Sorting tenders on trains. These particular mails were known as " Sunday Sorting Tenders." The duty commenced in the down mail trains on each Saturday night on the following lines of railway : North Western, Great Western, South Western, South Eastern, and to Cambridge and Ipswich, two officers being employed in each sorting tender. One set of officers worked outward on Saturday night and returned on Sunday morning ; another set worked down on Sunday night and back in Monday morning. In connection with these sorting tenders a special stamp was brought into use to be impressed on missent or misdirected letterswhich consisted of a boxed IST.
Regular cancels were applied to mail that had been sorted.

Bildeston
Bildeston code B Square Circle of 1907
Bildeston is a village and civil parish in the Babergh district of Suffolk, England. Located around 5 miles (8 km) north of Hadleigh. According to Eilert Ekwall the meaning of the village name is Bild's homestead. The first real evidence of Bildeston is in the Domesday Book.
The manor had been a royal estate of Queen Edith, consort of Edward the Confessor. Despite folktales explaining the move of the village down to the Brett valley as being caused by the Black Death of 1349, Matthew de Loveyne, then lord of the manor, was granted a charter for a market on the Stowmarket to Hadleigh Road in 1264. The move was to be more gradual and possibly more to do with easily accessible water. When the Revett family took over the manor in 1603 only the manor house and the church remained on the comparatively bleak hill, although houses on the road to the church were shown on early 19th century maps.
So called 'professional' people settled in the 19th century, there were plans to build a railway station on Dansford Meadow and the Riot Act was read during the 1885 elections. Bildeston, like so many other Suffolk villages, had survived a long period of decline, to again achieve relative affluence.
Today, Bildeston is a thriving village once more, boasting a post office and general provisions shop and three pubs. The King's Head, a Grade II listed freehouse dating from around 1530, organises an annual beer festival at the end of May. The other pubs in the village are a gastropub The Crown and The Red Lion. Previously known as The Lion, the Red Lion is a traditional 16th-century locals' pub with the current building thought to mainly date from the 18th century. The pub was situated in Wattisham, until 18 August 1882, when a detached portion of that parish was incorporated into Bildeston Parish; it was the only building in the detached portion of Wattisham.
