Merzig is the capital (29,745 inhabitants end 2018) of the district Merzig-Wadern, in Saarland, Germany. It is situated on the river Saar, south of Trier. The municipality Merzig was created in 1974 as part of the territorial reform in Saarland, consisting of the town of Merzig and 16 surrounding municipalities. Merzig postmarks were issued under the SAAR Administration in the 1920-1935 period. Historically in Prussian Trier province.
