Newcastle 150th Exhibition

Newcastle sesquicentennial Philatelic Exhibition cover of 1947sent Registered and locally to Mayfield.

Newcastle (Founded in 1797) celebrated its 150th year with a Philatelic Exhibition in September 1947. The Exhibition ran from September the 8th to the 18th. The Post Office issued 3 stamps to commemorate the sesquicentennial. Click the Icon > .

The Issue officially was for the Discovery of the Hunter River estuary the area chosen for the new city to be built. Fortuitously the area was found to have both vast amounts of coal copper and steel ore.





The land was discovered by Lieutenant John Shortland, however erroneously the 2½d stamp showed a picture of his father Captain (Later Commander) John Shortland who was part of the first 11 ships to take settlers to Australia. The others stamps featured Pouring of Steel (3½d) & Loading of Coal at Newcastle (5½d).

Mayfield

Mayfield is a north-western suburb (9,314 inhabitants in 2016) of Newcastle, New South Wales, which takes its name from Ada May (born 1874) a daughter of the landowner there, John Scholey. Its boundaries are the Hunter River to the north, the Main Northern railway line to the south (Waratah station), the railway line to Newcastle Harbour to the east, and open ground to the west.
