Popayán (pronunciation: [popaˈʝan]) is a municipality (280,504 inhabitants in 2016) the capital of the Colombian department of Cauca. It is located in southwestern Colombia between Colombia's Western Mountain Range and Central Mountain Range. It has an area of 512 km2, located 1760 m above sea level. Founded in 1537, the town is well-known for its colonial architecture and its contributions to Colombian cultural and political life.
