Sanchong is a 'district' (區) in the 'special municipality' (直轄市) of New Taipei City (新北市). Sanchong was previously an 'urban township' (鎮) in the former Taipei County (臺北縣) from 1947 to 1962 and was a 'county-administered city' (縣轄市)in that county from 1962 until the creation of New Taipei City in 2010.
