Ships and Explorers. British Navigators to the Southern Ocean

35p ~ James Weddell (1787-1834) and the Jane, a merchant brig and sealing ship, which made three voyages to the Southern ocean, including (accompanied by Matthew Brisbane, in the Beaufroy) reaching a point further south than any previous voyage. Weddell visited Tristan da Cunha in the Jane in 1822
45p ~ George Nares (1831-1915), and HMS Challenger (Nares was Commander of the Challenger expedition 1872-76); he was later a Royal Navy Vice-Admiral
70p ~ Carsten Borchgrevink (1864-1934) and SS Antarctic on which he sailed to Tristan and many points south in 1893-95 (crew members were the first to make a confirmed landing on the Antarctic continent, at Cape Adare)
£1.50 ~ Dr Alexander Macklin (1889-1967) and Quest, upon which he served as ship’s surgeon, and on which he visited Tristan da Cunha in May 1922
