Description

Wine production in Australia| is a growth industry. Australia is now the world's fourth largest wine exporter - behind France, Italy and Spain - and the single largest exporter of wine outside the {wikipedia:European Union|]]. Australia is the number one supplier of wine to the United Kingdom and number two to the United States of America.

Approximately 70 per cent of all Australian grapes come from the inland regions such as Griffith and Mildura and not the more famous regions like the Barossa|, Hunter and Yarra valleys. About 60 per cent of the total area of wine plantings is devoted to red varieties, of which shiraz makes up about a third.

Australia is known for its Shiraz - one in four glasses of wine consumed is a Shiraz. Chardonnay is the most widely planted of the white-wine grape variety, constituting almost a third of all white-wine plantings. While the first vines arrived in Australia in 1788 with the First Fleet, they were not successful and in the following years many attempts were made to establish winemaking ventures.

Wine-grape growing and winemaking are now carried out in every State and Territory of Australia. The period between 1990 and 2001 saw Australia emerge as one of the leading winemaking countries in the world with approximately 1.5 million bottles of wine leaving Australia every day, supplying 89 international markets.

The design adopts a photographic approach illustrating the process of wine production from growth in the vineyards to the convivial act of drinking. The stamps evoke a sense of the tradition and history in the Australian wine industry whilst simultaneously creating a sense of intimacy, recognition and pride. Graphic motifs - the fence post and wire, bottle and bottle opener have been used to expand the narrative.
