Soignies (pronunciation: ​[swaɲi]; Dutch: Zinnik, Picard: Sougniye) is a Walloon municipality (27,603 inhabitants end 2017) located in the Belgian province of Hainaut. The municipality is composed of the town of Soignies together with the villages of Casteau, Chaussée-Notre-Dame-Louvignies, Horrues, Neufvilles, Naast and Thieusies. Casteau is known worldwide because SHAPE, the military headquarters of NATO, has been based at the village since 1967. Soignies is also known for its blue limestone (pierre bleue) and its glass industry (Durobor).

Postal history

The SOIGNIES post office opened before 1830. It used a postal code 108 with bars (before 1864), and 336 with points before 1874. The CASTEAU office opened on 13 June 1881; Chaussée-Notre-Dame-Louvignies on 7 June 1899; Horrues relay on 5 July 1881; Naast office on 18 February 1878 and Thieusies relay on 11 May 1909.

NEUFVILLES used a 273 with points when it opened on 15 June 1870.
