Xinying is a 'district' (區) in the 'special municipality' (直轄市) of Tainan City (臺南市). After the Pacific War, Xinying was established as a 'rural township' (鄉) and later (1981) upgraded to a 'county-administered city' (縣轄市), both in the former Tainan County (臺南縣).
