Aalst is a city and municipality (82,587 inhabitants in 2013) on the Dender River, in the Flemish province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises also the villages of Baardegem, Erembodegem, Gijzegem, Herdersem, Hofstade, Meldert, Moorsel and Nieuwerkerken.
