The Large Queens

The Large Queens definitives were the first issue for the new Dominion of Canada, formed in July 1, 1868, from the Colony of Canada, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick (with later additions ending with Newfoundland in 1949). The series is so-called to distinguish it from the 1870 'Small Queens' - a quick replacement due to the unpopularity of the size of the large queens.

The first stamps were the ½¢, 1¢, 2¢, 3¢, 5¢, 6¢, 12½¢, 15¢, issued and in use from 1 April 1868 - therefore before the Dominion was officially in being. The 1¢ had a colour change in 1869, and a 5¢ value produced in 1875.

The design is based on an engraving by Charles Henry Jeens, with each value having a variation in the surrounding decoration. There were printings at Monteal and Ottawa on several different papers. A final printing of a shade of the 15¢ tok place in 1892, but most denominations were replaced by the small queens in 1870.
