Post Office Map for Newcastle upon Tyne Newcastle upon Tyne, commonly known as Newcastle, and historically known as Newcastle-on-Tyne, is a city and metropolitan borough in Tyne and Wear, North East England, situated on the north bank of the River Tyne and centred 8.5 mi (13.7 km) from the North Sea. It is the most populous city in North East England. The city lies at the urban core of the Tyneside conurbation, which is the seventh most populous conurbation in the United Kingdom and the most populous in the North East region. Newcastle is a member of the English Core Cities Group[4] and with Gateshead the Eurocities network of European cities. Newcastle was part of the county of Northumberland until 1400 when it became a county of itself; a status it retained until becoming part of the Tyne and Wear metropolitan county in 1974.

The Main Post Office

Newcastle was a very busy office, and because of this it was rewarded by the GPO and a grand building was constructed. Whilst the building remains in Newcastle it is no longer used for any Postal Operations. The city grew up in the area that was the location of the Roman settlement called Pons Aelius, and it owes its name to the castle built in 1080, by Robert (II), Duke of Normandy, "Curthose", William the Conqueror's eldest son. The city grew as an important centre for the wool trade and it later became a major coal mining area. The port developed in the 16th century and, along with the shipyards lower down the river, was amongst the world's largest shipbuilding and ship-repairing centres. Newcastle's economy includes corporate headquarters, learning, digital technology, retail, tourism and cultural centres. Among its main icons are Newcastle Brown Ale, a leading brand of beer, Newcastle United F.C., a Premier League team, and the Tyne Bridge. It has hosted the world's most popular half marathon, the Great North Run, since it began in 1981. The regional nickname and dialect for people from Newcastle and the surrounding area is Geordie.

Sub-Offices

Darras Hall Newcastle-on-Tyne, a large suburb to the north of Newcastle well known for its footballers houses. The Post Office is on Broadway.	Forest Hall Newcastle-on-Tyne, a suburb to the north east of Newcastle, post office is at Station Road.	Newburn a small village on the north bank of the tyne up river from Newcastle. It is famous for being one end of Stephensons first test railway.
Westgate Hill Post office on the main western road out of Newcastle. This road (A69) is a roman road leading 70 miles west to Carlisle.	Ponteland Post Office is 7 miles NW of the city centre.

National Insurance Buildings

Newcastle has held the NI Buildings for over half a century. It still hosts the site of the Ministry of National Insurance at Benton, Newcastle. The ministry had their own Town Sub Office in the buildings by 1949, however it closed 19 June 1996.

Edinr & Newcastle Sorting Tender

Part of the Great Britain Post Office functions was to use trains for distributing and sorting mail within the country. Special trains ran which had sorting carriages, they are classed as TPO (Travelling Post Offices)
