Falconry
This 1965 issue from Abu Dhabi features the Lanner Falcon, Falco biarmicus, shown on a falconer’s gloved hand. Falconry has long been associated with the Arabian Peninsula and the Gulf region, where trained birds of prey were traditionally used for hunting and later became an important symbol of heritage and identity.
In the United Arab Emirates, falconry remains one of the best-known traditional cultural practices. It is also recognised internationally as part of intangible cultural heritage, with falconry inscribed by UNESCO as “Falconry, a living human heritage”. UNESCO describes falconry as the traditional art and practice of training and flying falcons and other birds of prey.
