Description
This issue, jointly released by Australia and Sweden, features botanist and adventurer, Daniel Solander (1733-1782). Swedish born Solander travelled as a naturalist with James Cook and Joseph Banks on the HMS Endeavour. Although now remembered as Cook’s voyage, at the time it was Banks and Solander who received popular acclaim. Newspapers were full of their exploits.

45c Daniel Solander Stamp
The 45c stamp features an image of Daniel Solander based on a portrait attributed to William Parry ARA (from the Linnean Society of London) and a watercolour illustration of of Barringtonia calyptrata (based on sketches by Sydney Parkinson, Endeavour illustrator, from the Natural History Museum).
$1.50 Cochlospermum gillivraei Stamp
The $1.50 stamp features a watercolour illustration of Cochlospermum gillivraei (also based on sketches by Sydney Parkinson from the Natural History Museum, London) and a Sydney Parkinson drawing of the Endeavour caught on the reef near Endeavour River, north Queensland (from the University of Melbourne Archives).
