California Penny Post Co
From Stamps of the World
An independent mail route established in the United States by J P Goodwin in 1855.
Initially it operated between San Francisco, Sacramento, Stockton and Maryville in California. Later the company set up branches at Benicia, Coloma, Nevada, Grass Valley and Mokelumme Hill.
Stamps for this post were first issued in 1855 in 2, 3, 5 and 10 cent values. All these were lithographed. Also produced at the same time was a seperate 5 cent stamp in a much larger format than the other issues.
Forgeries of these stamps exist and are the work of Samuel Allan Taylor.
