Khmer Dance

This 2007 issue from Cambodia was released for the 40th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and features dancers as a cultural theme. The set forms part of Cambodia’s representation of traditional performance and cultural heritage within an ASEAN anniversary issue.

Khmer dance is one of Cambodia’s best-known cultural traditions. The Royal Ballet of Cambodia, also known as Khmer classical dance, is closely associated with the royal court and is noted for its stylised gestures, elaborate costumes and symbolic storytelling. UNESCO describes the Royal Ballet of Cambodia as a tradition renowned for graceful hand gestures and ornate costumes, historically linked with royal ceremonies and Khmer holidays.

Although the SOTW page title uses “Khmer Dance”, catalogue listings identify this issue more specifically as an ASEAN 40th anniversary dancers set. The related companion issue of the same date shows ASEAN sites, while this set focuses on dancers.
