The family of Clark (1880-1956) and Dinah (nee 1878) Day, which moved to Cowan in the late nineteenth century, gave its name to the Day post office at several sites just above Mandrake. It operated as an independent office, with Mrs Bonnie Hammond Day and others of that family as postmasters, from 1937 to 1959. Then it became a Whitesburg rural branch at the mouth of Long Branch, two and a half miles above Dongola.
