Discovery of America, 400th Anniversary
This 1893 issue from El Salvador commemorates the 400th anniversary period associated with Christopher Columbus and the European encounter with the Americas. Columbus’s first voyage reached the Caribbean in October 1492, an event widely marked in the late nineteenth century by commemorative exhibitions, monuments, medals and postage stamps.
The three high-value stamps show scenes connected with Columbus and the commemoration of his voyages: the 2p value depicts the founding of La Isabela, the 5p value shows the Columbus monument in Genoa, and the 10p value depicts Columbus’s departure from Palos de la Frontera.
