Telegraph stamps (also called Telegram stamps) are stamps intended solely for the prepayment of telegraph fees. The customer completed a telegraph form before handing it with payment to the clerk who applied a telegraph stamp and cancelled it to show that payment had been made. Telegraph stamps are regarded by many philatelists as collectable. The Dutch telegram stamps were issued in the period 1877-1903. Values range from 1 cent to 2.50 guilders, total 12 different issues. The telegram stamps with denominations 1, 3, and 12.5 cents were valid until June 30, 1903, the other denominations could be used until December 31, 1920. The cancellation was usually done with aniline, red or blue pencil and/or piercing with a hole, almost always round, sometimes square (very rare).
