Governor Henri Sautot
This 2010 stamp issue from New Caledonia commemorates Henri Sautot, a French colonial administrator who played an important role in the territory during the Second World War. In September 1940, following the fall of France, Sautot arrived in Nouméa and helped secure New Caledonia’s rallying to Free France rather than Vichy France.
Sautot served as Governor of New Caledonia from 1940 to 1942. His period in office was closely connected with New Caledonia’s wartime importance in the Pacific, including the organisation of local Free French support and the creation of the Bataillon du Pacifique. After the war, Sautot returned to New Caledonia and later served as mayor of Nouméa from 1947 to 1953.
