On 25th April 1915, 5 men from Norfolk Island landed at Gallipoli between 0730 and 0900 hours, and in the following days and months another 11 men from Norfolk Island also landed and served at Gallipoli. Initially a large wooden plaque recorded the Roll of Honour and the first ANZAC Day service was held on 25 April 1921 in the grounds between Government House and Quality Row with most of the Island attending. The War Memorial/Cenotaph featured on this Souvenir Sheet was unveiled on ANZAC day in 1929 by the Administrator H.S. Edgar. There are 13 pines planted from the Cenotaph along Pier Street, one for each young life lost during the war. Not all of these pines remain; however, the names of the fallen can be seen on this Cenotaph.
