Oświęcim (pronunciation: [ɔɕˈfjɛɲtɕim]; German: Auschwitz [ˈaʊʃvɪts]) is a town (39,057 inhabitants in 2006) in the Lesser Poland (Polish: Małopolska) province of southern Poland, situated west of Kraków, near the confluence of the Vistula (Wisła) and Soła rivers. The town is unfortunately known for being the site of the Auschwitz concentration camp (the camp is also known as KL or KZ Auschwitz Birkenau) during World War II, when Poland was occupied by Nazi Germany. Historically, in the Austrian Galicia crownland since 1772.
