Stamp Centenary
This 1957 airmail issue from Peru commemorates the centenary of the first Peruvian postage stamps. Peru’s early postage stamps appeared in the nineteenth century and included issues inscribed “Porte Franco”, before later stamps carried the country name.
The set is part of the wider postage stamp centenary theme and includes several stamp-on-stamp designs, alongside portraits and historical subjects connected with Peru’s postal history. Catalogue sources usually list the issue as a set of ten airmail stamps, although the current page shows nine stamp images.
The higher values include figures connected with Peruvian postal and political history, including José Dávila Condemarín, Director of Posts in 1857; President Ramón Castilla; and President Manuel Prado Ugarteche.
