General De Gaulle’s Death Anniversary
This 1972 issue from French Southern and Antarctic Territories (TAAF) commemorates Charles de Gaulle, the French general and statesman who led Free France during the Second World War and later became the founding president of the French Fifth Republic.
De Gaulle died on 9 November 1970 at Colombey-les-Deux-Églises, and this issue was released as part of the wider philatelic commemoration of his death anniversary. The two stamps show contrasting aspects of his public life: De Gaulle in military uniform in 1940, reflecting his wartime leadership, and De Gaulle as president, reflecting his later political role in post-war France.
