Along with Plate 2, these were the only Black plates issued on the first day of sale.
- Registration Date: 15th April 1840 sheet was unhardened steel and suffered wear. It was completely re-entered and designated Plate 1b.
- Date of first printing: 11th April 1840
- Date of final printing before repair: 16th May 1840
- Number of sheets printed: 13,497
- Destroyed: Re-entered and repair completed by 26.05.1840 when printing commenced as plate 1b. For Plate 1b see GB Black Plate 1b
- Constant Plate characteristics: Ray Flaws, Shifted Transfers, Double Letters & Constant varieties.
Repairs: Plate 1a was repaired and hardened becoming Plate 1b
