First 1840 Repair - State 2
The first repair to plate 5 occurred in 1840 prior to printing in red ink. Check letters are often fainter or thinned and RHS stronger.
Second 1840 Repair - State 2
The second repair to plate 5 also occurred in 1840 prior to printing in red ink and produced units repaired for the first time in state 2 and others repaired at both stages therefore producing units in state 3.

Earliest state in red following the 2nd plate repair
The colour was changed to red in February 1841. Due to the two earlier plate repairs during the period of black only printing this results in the earliest state in red being either state 1, state 2 or state 3 of the plate. These units can be matched with the repaired black letterings above.
Red prints in the earliest state of units that were later repaired. SG AS26 (A)
Earliest state in red with no later repair
These red units can be matched with the repaired black letterings above, but were not further repaired.
Third (Provisional) Repair - State 2
The third repair to plate 5 occurred early in January 1841 after the first printings in red had begun, but prior to the last (provisional) printing in black, resulting in units in red (the pre-provisional printings) existing in an earlier state than the final printing in black ink. The repair resulted in units existing in state 2, 3 and 4.
