Life

Professor Herbert Kern
(1912 - 1998)

Herbert Kern studied from 1935 to 1938 with Professor Emil Preetorius at the Academy of Applied Arts in Munich, where he became an employee after the war. From 1946 he taught at this academy. From 1978 until his retirement in 1981, he taught as a professor of writing and writing at the Academy of Arts in Munich. He was also one of the most prominent stamp graphic artists in the Federal Republic. Between 1950 and 1992, he submitted about 150 stamp designs to the Deutsche Bundespost. Of these, 31 were realized, three of which appeared in parallel for the Saarland. From 1974 to 1976, he also participated in two united-nation trade-mark competitions. However, he did not receive a contract there.

His estate consisted of hundreds of bags in several boxes, which testifies to his enormous creativity. The material left behind in sketches and drawings was impressive. It is no wonder that the Federal Ministry of Finance has repeatedly used Professor Kern's services, given the high quality of this material.
