Herne (pronunciation: [ˈhɛʁnə]) is a city (156,940 inhabitants end 2020) in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located in the Ruhr area, between Bochum and Gelsenkirchen. Wanne and Eickel merged in 1926. In 1975 Wanne-Eickel, by then with over 70,000 inhabitants, was incorporated into Herne. Historically in the Prussian province of Westphalia, District of Arnsberg.
