The "Marian Year" was exclaimed and opened on the 08 December 1953 in the "Basilica Santa Maria Maggione" in Rome by the then Pope Pius XII. This "Marian Year" lasted to the 06 December 1954 and should serve to a special remembrance of Mary, the mother of Jesu.

- 25 L.: The stamp motive shows a detail from the painting "Madonna and Child with St.John the Baptist and St. Sebastian" by Pietro Perugino (1446-1523). This painting was created in 1492 in the style of the Italian (High-) Renaissance and is contemprary showed to the publicity in the "Galleria degli Uffici" in Florence. Perugino was one of the teachers of Raffael.
- 60 L. The stamp motive shows a detail of the "Pietà"-sculpture by Michelangelo (Michelangelo Buonarroti, 1446-1523). This marble sculpture was created in 1499 or 1500 in the style of the Italian High-Renaissance and is contemprary located in the "Capella della Pieta" of the St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City in Rome.
