The Hague or 's-Gravenhage is the seat of government in the Netherlands, and the capital city of the province of South Holland. it is the third largest city of the Netherlands, after Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The Hague is the seat of the Dutch government and parliament, the Supreme Court, and the Council of State, but the city is not the capital of the Netherlands which constitutionally is Amsterdam. The Hague originated around 1230, when Count Floris IV of Holland purchased land alongside a pond, the present-day Hofvijver, in order to build a hunting residence. In 1248, his son and successor William II, King of the Romans, decided to extend the residence to a palace, which would later be called the Binnenhof (Inner Court).

's-Gravenhage Peace Conference 1907. The Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907 are a series of international treaties and declarations negotiated at two international peace conferences at The Hague in the Netherlands. Along with the Geneva Conventions, the Hague Conventions were among the first formal statements of the laws of war and war crimes in the body of secular international law. A third conference was planned for 1914 and later rescheduled for 1915, but it did not take place due to the start of World War I.

Cards and covers

In the period from 10 to 14 july 1904 an experimental cancel was used in 's-Gravenhage. It was called "golflijnstempel" or "aaltjesstempel". The experiment only lasted 4 days. The results were disappointing, printing was too weak and the date was hard to read. Example here shows the date 12 JULI 1904 on a letter card.
