Category:Stamps by Colour

From Stamps of the World

The colour categories are created directly at the stamp file level. They should be limited to hues (colour nuances) selected by stamps catalogues. When an adjective is added which does not modify the hue (for example Dark, Deep, Pale, Bright, Brilliant, Dull ...) the (new) colour is better placed as a sub-category, to facilitate the consultation and navigation.

The Stanley Gibbons 1840-1970 catalogue International Philatelic Glossary (2009 issue) lists 100 colours with a translation in French, German, Spanish and Italian.

The Yvert & Tellier catalogues - since at least 1936 - have a Table of 64 colours, from which most nuances are selected, and each with a representative (usual) stamp.

When there are 2 colours X-Y, the shade is closer to Y in English and in German, contrary to the French associations.
