Plate 42

  • Put to Press Date:7 April 1856
  • Destroyed: 1 December 1864 (However it is known that the plate was removed from the presses on 29 January 1862)
  • Constant Plate characteristics:
    • Blued paper in earlier printings
    • The engraving of Victoria's head is not well impressed on the plate and gives rise to the 'Cameo' effect.
    • Large Crown perf 14
      • Perf 16 copies are known made during the temporary perforation 16 issues of Dec 1857 - March 1858
    • Noted repairs occur on units TC and TD although its not known why these were neccessitated.
    • Main North East Ray of North East square is generally short. (Plates 37-49 & 52-60)
    • Most units showing the break in East frame (Plates 37-49 & 52-60)

Horizontal scratch extends from below the A square to below the T square of TB in the margin (TA_TB). Mostly seen on impressions on blue paper and transitional shades, appears to have faded shortly after the printings in Rose-red.
Later printings also show a number of small dots below NNY of the value in the margin, along with a dot in the margin ¼ way up of the West margin

Exists in 2 states, the First state being normal. The Second state is a coincidental re-entry resulting in faint letters of T & C. It has been found on later blue-paper prints, but it is always State 2 on Rose-red printings

Exists in 2 states, the First state being normal. The Second state is a coincidental re-entry resulting in faint letters of T & C. There is also a long horizontal hair like line on State 2 running through the Y, of PENNY and through the Full Stop and on into the D square almost touching the serif of the D. It has been found on later blue-paper prints, but it is always State 2 on Rose-red printings.

North margin extends East, Upper horizontal of F is broken/weak

Blurred coloured mark affect the Full Stop giving it a squashed appearance, frame of J square broken by it also. J has a small mark attached to its balled curve end
