Pictorial Postmarks in Philately

Introductiom

In addition to the normal cancellation of postage stamps with an office name and date, pictorial postmarks are also used. This means that extra information is provided in addition to the mandatory office name and date of stamping. Around 1900, mostly textual explanations were given about the use of postage stamps and upcoming events. But gradually various illustrations were added, which were clearly intended to stand out to the recipient of the letter or card as an "eye-catcher".

Division into groups

And there are many kinds of it. In this overview we limit ourselves to the following stamps/cancels with illustration, namely:

Group 1: Slogan Postmarks (in French: avec flamme). Sometimes called Machine Cancels.

Group 2: Roller cancels, also called repetitive or continuous cancels.

Group 3: Meter Stamps (in Dutch: frankeermachinestempels). Sometimes called Machine Cancels.

Group 4: Special Postmarks, single postmarks extended with an applicable illustration.
